"Becoming increasingly conscious of the self-aware universe: An info-systems engineering approach to mind, matter, and the energetic principles of life"

Over the past 50 to 100 years, our modern scientific view of life as we understand it has shifted radically. This transformation is generally viewed to parallel developments in physics beginning around the year 1905 – Einstein’s Annis Mirabilis (miracle year) – particularly in the quantum domain but not limited to the small-scale. Yet this shift was also significantly bolstered by developments in the biological sciences (in particular the neural sciences) and over the last 50 years or so by those in the engineering sciences. What we are now beginning to recognize is that consciousness is an integral aspect of the very makeup of the universe. In that, our own self-awareness is not distinct from the essential fabric of the cosmos.

In this seminar we will discuss how various principles from the system and information engineering sciences can help us to understand the nature of consciousness and its relationship to not only mind, but matter and the animating energetic principles of life as well. These developments have expanded the potential for science’s growth unto itself and as a human-centered enterprise while revealing areas of overlap and congruence with other humanistic domains such as philosophy, spirituality, and story-telling – domains long thought of as orthogonal or even antithetical to science’s purview. I argue that further exploration of the intersection of these disciplines will enhance each one as we move forward now, rather than compromise any of them.
